  1. Jan 21, 2017 · It is generally agreed that the Mk1 model does not suffer chassis rail problems, to adopt the American parlance, period. Both models can have rear sill rust, thats a result of design (there is a moisture trap, that was made a little worse in the Mk2 redesign), but also, because the car is a Roadster, there is a complex sill structure, that you need to drain water through in a way not needed ...

  2. Rust is a cancer, and once it's there it just gets worse. Rust you also see is the worst of the rust you haven't seen. When you come to fix it, you need to cut that rust out, and go back to good metal. It's not unheard of for a piece of rust that you've seen that's the size of a 50p piece to involve a good square foot of metal to be removed.

They're worth saving, but go in with your eyes open - you'll need to spend more than the car's worth to get it reasonable and even then you could be chasing rust like others have said.

  6. Jul 31, 2013 · The differences are exactly what you'd expect them to be. The mk2 is newer, so it's more refined, slightly heavier but ultimately faster then the mk1. However, the mk1 has a slightly intangible quality to it, a sense of fun that the mk2 doesn't have. It's maybe slightly nimbler and even though it's not quicker, it feels it.

  8. Sep 29, 2015 · My Mk1 import that came in from Japan in Feb 2015 does not suffer from rust issues. Mk1s tend to be more resilient than Mk2s in general, especially UK based cars, so I would go for an import ...
