I was planning on purchasing one as a birthday gift to introduce a family member to modern Atari. (They in turn, would have purchased games from the digital store, and most likely, spoke of their enjoyment of the console to other family members and friends.) A couple of years ago, I bought the VCS from Atari and had it shipped to Canada.
The Atari ST line would be something else to aspire to. One advantage to the Atari VCS being essentially a PC running a custom distribution of Linux is that both of these scenarios are plausible. I'm already doing this booting to Ubuntu with a wireless keyboard. Only real limitation hampering these sorts of things is the small default SSD.
And no- it is NOT believed they are down to last stock- if you followed the China to U.S. shipping there was about 25-30k imported ...and if you look at the VCS store sales #'s of games... there is no way they sold anywhere near 30k VCS worldwide... as they have not yet hit a shown 40k games...and most people have bought SEVERAL games for each owner.
