Bluestacks requires a lot of storage space because, if you emulate an smartphone, it will probably take from 632 MB up to 6.2 GB. If you need even more performance, use virtualization. For me it took 632 MB.

From my understanding, it's the same concept as when you buy a new phone or tablet it will have internal storage capacity. Installing BlueStacks simulates a device on your PC/Mac and it needs its internal storage.
