Jun 28, 2022 · Like many iconic airlines of the past Braniff is one I really wish was still around. Braniff started its journey in 1928 by a (World War I) aviator named Paul Braniff and his brother Thomas Braniff. Their first route was between Oklahoma City and Tulsa operating a Stinson SB-1 Detroiter, that only carried 5 passengers.
May 12, 2023 · In 1951, the airline acquired Mid-Continent Airlines, further growing its fleet size to 75 aircraft and a workforce of over 4,000 employees. Within a few years, Braniff became the tenth-largest airline in the US by passenger miles. Unfortunately, both Thomas and Paul Braniff died just a year too early to witness this key milestone.

On January 10, 1954, Thomas Braniff died when a Grumman flying boat he was flying on crashed as a result of ice contaminating the wings. A short time later in June of the same year, Paul Braniff died from complications of cancer and pneumonia.
