Bedrock is just Java that's slightly more annoying in general, has in-app purchases, has cross-play, improved performance than unmodded Java, and finally, has RTX. Verdict: Java is definitely preferred if you are on PC and so are all your friends.
The problem now is that players depend on a number of the subtle differences in their editions, so things can't align. For example, stripping out all of the redstone features in Java Edition would infuriate the java playerbase. The opposite is true for the Bedrock playerbase.
If you don't have friends who play Minecraft, then the basic difference is: Java Edition has a massive modding community and a nearly infinite number of privately run servers you can connect to for multiplayer. Bedrock Edition is better optimized with better performance, and makes peer-to-peer play (joining a friends world) easy and simple.
