But my guess is that at least several of the STM peripherals were designed in-house by STMicro and hence should not be available to the GD design. Something seems suspicious here.

As far as I could judge both chips are legit and not counterfeits as we bought both chips from (different) reputable sellers. The used chips are GD32F103CBT6 and STm32F103CBT7.

   • The STM32F103 has good documentation. It consists of a datasheet, giving a global overview, and a reference manual, covering the details such as the registers. ST has github repositories containing the libraries needed to develop for the microcontroller. Most of the code is under a 3BSD license, however, some parts are under a non-free license.
