Oct 10, 2023 · On the iMac, with iCloud Drive setting to On and with iCloud Drive Desktop/Documents setting to Off it is possible to use iCloud Drive for simple backup of files. Without the files synchronizing. The key is to copy/paste files from the iMac/Documents subfolder to the iCloud/Documents subfolder. This is easily done using Finder on the iMac.

After you set up iCloud for Windows, you can turn on iCloud Drive to view files stored in iCloud on your Windows computer. Before getting started, find out which version of iCloud for Windows you have.

1.On your Windows computer, open iCloud for Windows.
2.To the right of iCloud Drive, click , then turn on “Your files stored in iCloud Drive will sync to their own folder in File Explorer.”
3.Click Done.
Files under 1 MB are downloaded automatically. You can open and view downloaded files directly on your computer.
Your files and folders are stored in C:\Users\[user name]\iCloud Drive by default. If you have iCloud for Windows 14 or later, you can choose a different location.
1.On your Windows computer, open iCloud for Windows.

5.Choose a different disk drive that’s formatted as NTFS, click Select Folder, then click OK.

If you're not using Desktop and Documents in iCloud then put all your files, arranged in subfolders, in the Documents folder in your Home folder. If you are using Desktop and Documents with iCloud then put everything in the Documents folder in iCloud Drive.
