Marine debris has been documented by Gall and Thompson to impact more than 700 species, from coastal vegetation, to plankton, invertebrates, fish, cetaceans, sea turtles and seabirds.
Animals may become tangled up in marine debris and unable to free themselves. This can affect the animal in a variety of ways, ranging from mild discomfort to seriously impacting the animal’s ability to survive. Entangled animals may get abrasions from the debris, resulting in a dangerous infection.
Moreton Bay is affected by a wide range of persistent pollutants, including the following four broad groups: (i) dioxins and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), (ii) trace elements (e.g. metals, metalloids and non-metals), (iii) perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAAs) and (iv) plastic-based marine debris.
