The short version is that Minecraft is now bundling a standalone version of Java into their installation and it doesn't have the security problems and annoyances that regular Java does.

It is solely used for Minecraft -- it is downloaded and stored with the Minecraft launcher. It is virtually invisible and inaccessible to the rest of my system - therefore my system is not open to Java vulnerabilities. –.
