Colossians 1:11 tells us that we are strengthened by Him to “great endurance and patience,” while James 1:3-4 encourages us to know that trials are His way of perfecting our patience.
- Identify core issues that contribute to impatience. Irritability is a common symptom of stress, anxiety, and burnout. We are not at our best when struggling with these types of issues, which are often chronic.
- Identify and address stressors that lead to impatience. We are not at our best when our basic needs are unmet. If you begin to feel impatient, you can use the HALT acronym to remind you to check for signs of feeling hungry, angry, lonely, or tired.
- Reframe your thoughts. Impatience is usually driven by negative thought processes. If you find yourself impatient, you may become frustrated at the idea that someone (or even the universe) is trying to ruin your day.
- Engage in self-care. In therapy, we talk a lot about self-care. That’s because self-care, self-indulgence, and self-sabotage can look alike sometimes.
- Practicing Mindfulness. Mindfulness is a form of meditation where you focus your full attention on the present moment. This involves observing your thoughts and feelings without judgment.
- Setting Realistic Expectations. Another effective strategy for cultivating patience involves setting realistic goals and expectations. It’s natural to aim high and push our limits, however, setting unattainable standards can lead to feelings of frustration and impatience when we fail to meet them.
- Learning to Pause. Taking a step back in challenging situations offers several benefits that contribute to cultivating patience. It allows for a dynamic shift in perspective, enabling you to view the situation from different angles.
- Practicing Empathy. Practicing empathy is another powerful strategy in cultivating patience. Empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings of others, which, in turn, can help nurture patience in our interactions.
