The complex relationship between anxiety and self-esteem has been examined further in this study, indicating that low self-esteem is associated with trait anxiety, but importantly it also mediates the relationship between trait anxiety and elevated use of emotion regulation strategy suppression.

Mar 27, 2023 · Our findings, based on 549 effect sizes from 58 samples, show that adaptive emotion regulation is positively related to cognitive empathy (ρ = .22), affective empathy (ρ = .07), and compassion (ρ = .19) but negatively related to empathic distress (ρ = –.12).
