Mar 28, 2022 · ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Nearly half of all children in Rochester live in poverty according to the U.S Census Bureau. That ranks second highest in the nation of areas with a population of 100,000 or more. Only Syracuse has a higher childhood poverty rate than Rochester among mid-to-large-size cities.
Among all the localities in our 8-county region, the City of Rochester stands out with the highest count of residents living below the poverty line, totaling 56,000+ individuals as of 2022.
Rochester’s poverty rate for adults is 28.9%, placing it second among the comparably sized cities (Chart C), while the 15.4% poverty rate for seniors ranks fifth (Chart D). There are more than 25,000 children (under age 18) living in poverty in Rochester (Table 4, next page). However, this reality needs context.
