The Broadband Fund is comprised of two components. Under the main component, the CRTC will consider projects to build or upgrade access and/or transport infrastructure for fixed and mobile wireless broadband Internet access services in all areas except in satellite-dependent communities.

The Minister selects projects that best meet the objectives of the program. Selected projects are conditionally approved, pending a due diligence process and the negotiation of contribution agreements between the Minister and funding recipients. Project details may change throughout the negotiation process.
In coordination with existing federal connectivity programs, the Universal Broadband Fund supports broadband infrastructure projects bringing high-speed Internet to rural and remote households in areas that lack service of at least 50/10 Mbps. The program also supports mobile projects that primarily benefit Indigenous peoples.

Aug 4, 2021 · With today’s announcement, the Broadband Fund has to date committed up to nearly $177 million to improve broadband services for 152 communities, representing approximately 28,125 households. Among the projects previously approved, regional governments and smaller companies will receive up to $82 million in funding to close the digital divide in the most isolated communities of Canada.
