Dec 1, 2022 · Bottom line. Antibiotic prophylaxis lowers the risk of recurrent UTIs (12% vs 66% placebo) over 6 to 12 months. Yet, more women have adverse events with antibiotics (15% vs 8% placebo). Long-term bacterial resistance and its individual clinical impact have not been well studied. This does not apply to asymptomatic bacteriuria.
Definition and Epidemiology. Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections in women, and 50% to 60% of adult women experience a UTI during their lifetime. 1,2 It is estimated that in young women there are 0.5 episodes of acute cystitis per person per year. 3 This incidence decreases with age.

Fortunately, flucloxacillin is an antibiotic that is only indicated for infections likely to be caused by S. aureus and, in UK primary care, this is almost exclusively SSTIs.
