Tempted (1:13) is the same Greek word that is translated trial (1:2, 12), but clearly it has two different senses. God tests or tries believers’ faith, but He does not tempt anyone into sin. God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac (Gen. 22:1-19). God tested Job by allowing Satan to afflict him with all of his trials (Job 1:8-12;...

Wise parents do not let their children play with dynamite, because they know that it has a powerful, destructive force. James shows three ways that temptation is powerfully destructive:

James shows that sin is never stationary. It moves steadily in its course toward its ultimate, hideous end—death. Sin is like a small crack in a dam. At first, it doesn’t seem threatening. But if it is not repaired quickly, it can lead to the collapse of the entire dam, causing terrible destruction. Death (1:15) stands in contrast to the crown of l...

I close with four practical ways to overcome temptation: (1) Study and know yourself. Know where you’re vulnerable and devise strategies to protect yourself. Others may be able to handle situations where you will fall. Don’t go with them if it is a source of temptation for you. Develop a deep distrust in yourself that drives you to a desperate clin...

Why is it important to recognize the source of our sin as being our own lusts? Why does knowing this give hope for victory?
A popular author emphasizes that we are not sinners, but saints who occasionally sin? Is this helpful or harmful? Why?
When the powerful emotions of evil desire hit us, should we just deny them? What about “letting go and letting God”? See Titus 2:11-12; 1 Pet. 2:11.
A person who claims to be a Christian is constantly defeated by sin. How would you counsel him [her]?
  2. Nov 4, 2024 · Temptation, by its very nature, feels wrong. God’s moral law is written in the heart of every human being (Romans 1:20), and when a sinful temptation is introduced, our consciences immediately sense danger. However, the temptation itself is not the sin. Jesus was tempted (Mark 1:13; Luke 4:1-13), but He never sinned (Hebrews 4:15).

  3. Whether it comes from the devil or arises out of our own desires, the goal of temptation is always to lead us to sin. God will never directly lead us into any disobedience. That said, he can use the enticements to sin brought by other sources (Daniel 12: 9 - 10) as a means of testing, refining and perfecting a person's character.

  4. Sep 20, 2024 · In the first chapter of Job, we see that God allowed Satan to tempt Job, but with restrictions. Satan is roaming on the earth like a lion, seeking people to devour (1 Peter 5:8). Verse 9 tells us to resist him, knowing that other Christians are also experiencing his attacks. By these passages we can know that temptations come from Satan. We see ...

  6. Temptation Does Not Come From God - Great blessings belong to those who are tempted and remain faithful! After they have proved their faith, God will give them the reward of eternal life. God promised this to all people who love him. Whenever you feel tempted to do something bad, you should not say, “God is tempting me.” Evil cannot tempt God, and God himself does not tempt anyone.
