In Doctrine and Covenants 42:23, “to lust after” means to have unrighteous sexual desires toward another person. The scriptures clarify that when a person looks on another to lust after him or her, it is as though he or she has “committed adultery … already in his [or her] heart” ( Matthew 5:28 ; see also 3 Nephi 12:28 ; D&C 63:16 ).
Since the 1921 edition, the Lectures on Faith were no longer included, but the title Doctrine and Covenants stayed the same. 1. The Covenants. The remainder of the book contained revelations received by Joseph Smith. This portion was known as the “covenants and commandments of the Lord” or “covenants” for short.
In 1835, the book was printed and published under the title Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of the Latter Day Saints: Carefully Selected from the Revelations of God.
