The Vermont Department of Corrections began in 1795, when the first prison, the Newbury Jail, was built. Today the state of Vermont's Prison System maintains 6 state correctional institutions. As of the end of 2023 the Vermont DOC oversees approximately 430 state inmates and another 1,200 jail inmates awaiting trial, with another 5,000 on parole and probation.
