You don't really gain anything, though: you can't do much more on that page than you can do on the New Tab Page. Results will be shown on a DDG page in both cases, so you can refine your search just as you may be used to. Bottom line: you don't have to visit duckduckgo.com to use 'DuckDuckGo as Default Search Engine.'

I would like to have DuckDuckGo to open as default when I open the new tab, but I can't find a way to do it. Is MS trying to limit access to other search engines? Why are you forcing us to use Bing?
May 7, 2020 · I used duckduckgo.com as my primary search engine too and after a while Microsoft Edge won't open the site. You don't have to open the search provider's page to conduct a search. There are several ways of doing a web search in Edge, because the address box also acts as a search box.
