His wife Karoline was the daughter of a pastor from Haunsheim and her father, Johann Gottfried Walther (1785-1852), tutored Ernst for two years when he was young. In fact Ernst lived with his grandfather during these two years.
He never married. Work. Schröder's early work on formal algebra and logic was written in ignorance of the British logicians George Boole and Augustus De Morgan. Instead, his sources were texts by Ohm, Hankel, Hermann Grassmann, and Robert Grassmann (Peckhaus 1997: 233–296). In 1873, Schröder learned of Boole's and De Morgan's work on logic.
He married his wife, Eva Maria, in 1949, consequently, he and his wife raised 8 sons. In part-time studies he also became a building engineer. He worked for 33 years in the building department of the town of Bonn, specializing in restoring churches and other important historical buildings.
This paper, which was prepared in Ger-man, was later revised with the help of Dr. Breidert, my wife, Monika, my father-in-law, Wilhelm Schmidt of Trier, and the editor, Prof. Dr. Hans-Wolf Thiimmel, also contains a photograph of Schroder and facsimiles of a number of documents.
