Well, on the inside track of experimental big band jazz, and going back a bit, I would hihgly recommend taking a look at Artie Shaw's 1949 Big Band recordings (try and find the versions collected together as "Artie Shaw, The Last Recordings Vol. II: The Big Band" on the Music Masters Jazz lable).
