UBC’s first winter athletics facility opened in 1963 and has been home to the UBC Thunderbirds Hockey ever since. Named after the founder of Canada’s first national hockey program, Father David Bauer, the arena has undergone massive renovations and gained an additional two rinks: Thunderbird Arena and Protrans Community Arena.
There are three arenas inside the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre: Thunderbird Arena, Father David Bauer Arena, and the Protrans Arena. The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is dedicated to providing an exciting and memorable guest experience while ensuring the safety and security of all guests.
The Father David Bauer Arena and the Protrans Arena are primarily used for hockey related programs hockey and skating lessons, public skating sessions, and two hockey leagues. The facility also features pro shop that carries some hockey and skating equipment as well as providing services such as skate rentals and skate sharpening.
