  1. Apr 25, 2022 · Owen says it’s especially helpful to consider how much of God’s greatness we don’t know: “It is but a little portion we know of him.”. It’s hard for sin to flourish in a heart filled with a sense of God’s majesty. 9. Don’t rush to comfort yourself. Owen’s final instruction comes in the form of a caution.

    • Proverbs 5:18-19 “Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.”
    • Lamentations 3:25-27 “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
    • 1 Peter 3:15 “In your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.”
    • 2 Peter 3:10-14 “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief…Therefore…be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.” Do you want to be cheating on your husband, masturbating, or watching Game of Thrones when Christ returns?

John Wesley wrote, “As the most dangerous winds may enter at little openings, so the devil never enters more dangerously than by little unobserved incidents, which seem to be nothing, yet insensibly open the heart to great temptations.”1The best way to wall off our heart from Satan’s enticements is to know the Scriptures. They teach us how to withs...

In addition to assurances of God’s love and support, the Bible promises that God will equip us to overcome the enemy’s schemes.

The Bible does not mention stress, but it has plenty to say about stressful situations. King David was someone who faced many trials. He fought wild animals, a giant, and a king as a young man. Later in life, his own son attempted to assassinate him. Although God did not remove the stressful situations from David’s life, He sustained David through ...

When spiritual battles mount, Scripture is our first line of defense. It contains the mind of Christ between two covers. John’s Gospel says, “And the Word [Jesus] became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Later, Jesus told His disciples, “I am the...

  2. Jul 30, 2020 · Satan often attacks when we’re weak. 1 Peter 5:8-9 says,”Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.”. Prowling lions don’t go for the strongest animal in the group. They go for the one who is weak. The one who is separated from the group. The one is vulnerable to attack.

    • Hate it. We are accustomed to using the gospel to relieve the guilt of our sin. But sometimes — especially in the case of persistent, nagging sins — we should use the gospel first to aggravate our guilt.
    • Starve it. In one of my favorite films, a man is diagnosed with schizophrenia and told that several of his lifelong friends are actually not real. He genuinely misses talking to them, but knows he must stamp out all delusions in order to move toward health.
    • Corner it. Sin, like any other enemy, thrives among its allies (unhappiness, exhaustion, and discouragement are some that come to mind). To wage effective war against sin, therefore, we must deprive it of the opportunities and occasions it makes use of.
    • Overwhelm it. In the gospel, God has given us the resources that we need to deal with nagging sins. Let me just mention three: patience, pardon, and power.
  3. Nov 16, 2015 · Here are thirteen tactical steps in the battle: 1. Take heart from the truth that the old sinful you is decisively already dead (Romans 6:6; Colossians 3:3; Galatians 5:24). By faith we are united to Christ so that his death was our death (Romans 6:5; 2 Corinthians 5:14). This means three things: (a) The mortal blow to our “old man” has ...

  5. Oct 31, 2022 · A survey of what the Bible says on the matter will demonstrate the urgency and the possibility for the believer to kill sin at the root-level of desire. The danger of the desire for sin is evident from the earliest pages of Scripture: it was in part the desirability of the forbidden fruit that led Eve to commit the first sin (Genesis 3:6).
