Hell fire and brimstone sermons were commonly associated with preachers of the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and America. One of the most famous was Jonathan Edwards, whose sermon 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God' was one of the most widely known.
Preachers such as Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield were referred to as “fire and brimstone preachers” during the Great Awakening of the 1730s and 1740s. Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” remains among the best-known sermons from this period.
