Gaijin is now just a word meaning foreigner, from the word itself in modern, daily, common usage you cannot derive a neutral, positive or negative connotation. That just depends on intent/context.
Jun 15, 2009 · If you mean "gaijin" when it means the usual slang word for foreigner (because there are homonyms), I usually feel a pang of disappointment: the "native" versus "foreigner" aspect of Japan even against Koreans that were born there always seemed to detract from what is otherwise a wonderful people and place to live.

Nov 4, 2018 · I'm sure most of you are familiar with the concept of the "gaijin hunter", Japanese individuals who like to befriend or date foreigners because of an attraction to their perceived "foreignness" and the exoticism that comes with it, as opposed to primarily their personality.
Gaijin, can you please either delete this ahistorical permanent decal or at least switch it to the correct one? Better yet, give us both of them as decals, and let me do it myself.

May 19, 2022 · Generally I consider a "gaijin hunter" someone that has an unhealthy fetish for "foreigners" and in turn has unreasonable expectations. For example, many young Japanese people go to Paris and end up needing psychological counseling because they had some "fairytale" image of the place.
