Bell Island is located 5 km off the western coast of the Avalon Peninsula. The provincial government operates a ferry service from Portugal Cove to Bell Island. Bell Island (and the town of Wabana) was once the location of a major iron ore mine which went out under the sea bed.

Unfortunately, the only way accessible to Bell Island is by ferry from Portugal Cove to Bell Island. The ferry ride is approximately 20 minutes. You could quickly fill half or even a full day on Bell Island.
Took the Legionaire from Potugal Cove NF to Bell Island (and return). The ferry is well run and loading/unloading is painless. No major delays at either end. All passengers must leave their vehicle and go on deck or to the cafateria. There are stairs and an elevator to get to the upper decks.
