Objective: To develop an automated, data-driven, and scale-flexible method to delineate hospital service areas (HSAs) and hospital referral regions (HRRs) that are up-to-date, representative of all patients, and have the optimal localization of hospital visits.
Geographic methods for health care service area construction were the subject of a comprehensive review in the context of geography (Simpson et al., 1994). There are three major types of methods for creating service areas: geographic distance, geopolitical areas, and patient origins.
