How Missouri Property Taxes Work. Taxes on residential real estate in Missouri are due by Dec. 31 of each year. Taxes paid after that date are subject to a 10% penalty. How much you owe in property taxes depends on your home’s assessed value and the total tax rate in your area.
The amount of property taxes imposed on any taxpayer is determined by two separate factors: (1) The assessed value of their taxable property, as established by the local assessor, and (2) The total of the tax rates that have been set by the several governing bodies of local governments where the property is located.

The assessed value is a percentage of the market value, or the dollar amount for which the house could reasonably be sold. Some states and localities set the assessment percentage as high as 100% of the market value (WA State Dpt of Revenue, 2022).
