Seals are part of the Phocidae family, also known as “true seals” or “earless seals”. On the other hand, sea lions belong to the Otariidae family, which includes “eared seals” and “fur seals”. These classifications hint at some of the key differences we’ll explore further.
Feb 26, 2024 · A massive difference between seals and sea lions is that seals have a fused pelvic bone which massively reduces the movement in the front half of their bodies. For this reason, movement comes from the back half of their body making them move in a “wormlike” way.
- Guadalupe Fur Seal. Arctocephalus townsendi. Males are about 7 feet (2.1 meters) long and weigh up to 400 lbs (181 kilograms).
- Northern Fur Seal. Callorhinus ursinus. Males are about 7 feet (2.1 meters) long and weigh up to 600 lbs (272 kilograms). They are dark brown to black overall.
- California Sea Lion. Zalophus californianus. Males are about 7.5 feet (2.2 meters) long and weigh up to 700 lbs (318 kilograms).
- Steller’s Sea Lion. Eumetopias jubatus. Males are about 11 feet (3.3 meters) long and weigh up to 2,500 lbs (1,134 kilograms).
Oct 26, 2023 · Seals and sea lions both belong to a group of marine mammals called “pinnipeds”, meaning fin- or feather-footed in Latin. True seals have ear holes, but no ear flaps. Included in this group are species like the Harbour seal, Hawaiian Monk seal, Ringed seal and Harp seal.
Sea lions (and fur seals) are distinguished from true seals by their comparably large front flippers, visible ear flaps, and ability to curl their back flippers under their body to walk on all fours. Sea lions are vocal, expressing themselves in loud barks.

For example, male California sea lions can weigh up to 850 pounds and grow to be about 7 feet long. In contrast, an adult male Harbor seal typically maxes out around 300 pounds and 6 feet in length.
