The placement of soils into the correct class is based on the horizons that we can see in the soil profile. Distinctive sets of soil horizons result from the response of the soil-forming processes (discussed in Chapter 2) to soil forming factors.

Nature and purpose of soil classification. Misconceptions about soil taxonomy. Attributes of the Canadian system. Bases of criteria for defining taxa at various categorical levels. Relationship of taxonomic classes to environments. Relationship of the Canadian system to other systems of soil taxonomy. Summary.
Specific horizon definitions are based on a generalization of properties of soil horizons that are known to be representative of the main soil classes and reflect the kinds and degrees of soil development. Whenever possible, the specifications are based on observable or easily measurable properties.
Soils can vary widely in their properties, and each has a unique arrangement of layers or horizons. The soil profile description provides the information that distinguishes one soil from another. Review the following example of a profile description, and note the explanation of terms in Table 4.1.
The horizon description system begins by splitting soil horizons into two distinct groups: organic and mineral horizons. Organic horizons are those that contain 17% or more organic carbon; mineral horizons have less than 17% organic carbon.
