Feb 10, 2016 · The mean density of the star is really only defined by the formula $\bar\rho=M/V=3M/4\pi R^3$. The radius of a star is a generally a very complicated function of a star's other properties. When we determine the radius in stellar models, it's only because we've solved equations that describe the structure of the whole star, and read off the value at what we define as the surface.
Apr 11, 2022 · Exercise 18.2. 1 18.2. 1. In the previous section, we determined the sum of the masses of the two stars in the Sirius binary system (Sirius and its faint companion) using Kepler’s third law to be 3.2 solar masses. Using the mass-luminosity relationship, calculate the mass of each individual star. Answer.
The mass of the Sun is M = 2.0 ×1033 g. (3.2) The radius of the Sun is r = 7.0 ×1010 cm. (3.3) Using the mass and the radius, we can find the mean density of the Sun: ρ¯ = M 4 3 πR 3 = 3 ×2 ×1033 g 4 ×(7 1010 cm) = 1.4 g cm−3. (3.4) The Sun’s mean density is thus not too different from that of liquid water. The bolometric Solar ...

dM(r) = 4r 2 (r) dr. (3) This is the first equation of stellar structure (mass conservation, or the equation of conti-nuity). M(r) means the mass interior to radius r. Now, the local density (r) and temperature T (r) are also related. For a star on the main sequence, its hot interior behaves like an ideal gas:
White Dwarfs: High-density stars: ~10 5 g/cm 3. For reference, at sea level on Earth, water has a density of 1 g/cm 3, and air has a density of ~0.001 g/cm 3. Note: In reality, stars are denser in their cores and become less dense as you move outwards to the surface. The mean stellar density is just a simple way to quantify how tightly packed the
Return for a moment to the central pressure in a uniform star: • The only part of the equation which depends upon the functional form of the density is the dimensionless coefficient, In this week’s homework, for example, you will use different density functions: and obtain . 25 January 2022 Astronomy 142, Spring 2022 17. 2 4. 3. Calculating the Mass from the Luminosity of a Star The mass-luminosity formula can be rewritten so that a value of mass can be determined if the luminosity is known. Solution First, we must get our units right by expressing both the mass and the luminosity of a star in units of the Sun’s mass and luminosity:
