Lots and Subdivisions. If you have a subdivision of land, surveyors can split ¼ sections into even smaller lots. You can describe a land parcel based on the smallest subdivision. Think about a neighborhood development with individual lots.
Along the north-south line, the surveyor establishes township lines north and south from the initial point. Each line is created at 6 nominal mile intervals. Along the east-west line, the surveyor establishes range lines east and west from the initial point also at 6 nominal mile intervals.
Township lines run north and south, Range lines run east and west. Their intersections create a grid of townships. Each township is further divided into sections, quarter sections and legal subdivisions. There are approximately 3,600 townships in Saskatchewan.

Township lines are measured from the border with the United States at the 49th parallel. Each township line is 6 miles apart. Townships are numbered consecutively going north beginning at the border with the United States (Figure 2). Range lines are measured along east-west baselines.
