Oct 15, 2022 · The volume of a solid must be measured indirectly based on its shape. For regularly shaped solids, such as a cube, sphere, cylinder, or cone, the volume can be calculated from its measured dimensions (length, width, height, diameter) by using an appropriate equation.

Jun 18, 2020 · Objectives. To use a metric ruler to measure the dimensions of regular geometric shapes, and to use these measurements to determine the areas of the shapes. To measure the volume of a sample of water using a graduated cylinder and a beaker in order to compare their precision.
In this lab, the dimensions of various objects will be measured using a meter stick, vernier caliper, and micrometer. You will also get a chance to compare the British and metric system of units. With the use of an electric scale, the mass of some objects will be measured and from this, the density will be calculated.

Identify the three basic parts of a measured quantity; Describe the properties and units of length, mass, volume, density, temperature, and time; Convert between various metric units; Calculate density using appropriate units
For example, we usually measure the volume of a liquid sample with pipettes, burets, graduated cylinders, and volumetric flasks (Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\)), whereas we usually measure the mass of a solid or liquid substance with a balance (Figure \(\PageIndex{2}\)).
Definitions. Accuracy – refers to how close the measured value is to the true, correct, or accepted value. Balance – an instrument to measure mass precisely. Buret – a long glass tube with graduations and a stopcock for dispensing variable amounts of liquid, especially in titration.
