This map was initially created for the National Parks of North America. I wanted to highlight the shared protected areas of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Nevertheless, there was so much information to include that I decided to split the map into 3 maps. You can find the National Parks of the United States here and the National Parks of Mexico here.
The shapefiles with data for Canada's National Parks were obtained from Open Canada. The shapefiles with country polygons were downloaded from Naturalearth. The system, which is 79 percent complete, represents the diversity of natural regions and landscapes in Canada. Forty-seven national parks represent 31 of Canada’s 39 terrestrial regions, and protect approximately 342,456 square kilometres of Canada’s lands.
As of July 2024, there are 37 national parks and 11 national park reserves, covering an area of approximately 343,377 km 2 (132,579 sq mi), [9] or about 3.3% of the total land area of Canada, and representing 31 of its 39 natural regions. There is at least one park located in every one of the nation's 13 provinces and territories.
