A recent review of health services research within England has shown an increase in the proportion of studies classified as mixed methods from 17% in the mid-1990s to 30% in the early 2000s. 2 In this paper, we present a synthesis of key literature on mixed methods research, with examples from our own work and that of others to illustrate the practical applications of this approach.
