Applying over the Internet is fast, easy, and secure. Most people can apply for benefits and manage their unemployment claims online through Unemployment Benefits Services. However, if you worked in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, or Puerto Rico in the past 18 months, you must call the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Tele-Center at 800-939-6631 instead.
In terms of pay, during the first 8 weeks that you collect unemployment, you must accept suitable work that pays 90% or more of your previous salary. After that, the Texas Labor Code states you must accept work paying 75% of your previous salary. Temporary unemployment benefits are meant to be just that…temporary.
The Work Search Notification form (BI940) contains the minimum number of required work search activities that you must make each week. TWC mails you this form when you file your initial claim and each time your required work search quantity changes. You can call Tele-Serv to verify your current minimum required work search activities.
If you are living in Texas, you can register for work in-person at a Texas workforce center or over the Internet at WorkInTexas.com. Registering for work is separate and distinct from submitting an application for Unemployment Benefits. If you are living outside of Texas, you can register with your local employment service office.
