Aug 7, 2024 · With the Lancet report as an anchor, here are some tips for how you can reduce your risk for dementia and maintain a healthy brain throughout your life.
Address diabetes. Quit smoking. Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Get more physical activity. It’s never too soon to address vascular health and potentially prevent dementia. Healthy choices and lifestyle changes in your 40s may make a difference in your dementia risk.
- Memory loss. Memory loss is not always caused by dementia. Other types of memory loss include age-related memory loss and mild cognitive impairment. Dementia-related memory loss is ongoing and tends to get worse over time.
- Difficulty staying focused. The ability to focus on a conversation or activity may decline as dementia progresses. People living with dementia might walk away in the middle of a conversation or a task.
- Challenges with being understood. Some people living with dementia can speak fluently and at length. Others may have increasing difficulty communicating their thoughts.
- Difficulty understanding others. People living with dementia may have difficulty understanding things they hear or read. They might not realize that their sentences don't make sense.
Changes in the brain that may lead to dementia can begin decades before signs or symptoms appear. It is never too early or too late to take action that can benefit your brain health. Some studies have identified several modifiable risk factors associated with a greater risk of developing dementia.
Years of animal and human observational studies suggest that exercise may help with brain health and cognitive performance, or how well you think, learn, and remember. No clear link between physical activity and preventing Alzheimer’s has been documented.
