In late 2019 I applied to around 15 of the best Creative Writing MFA's in the United States. All of these programs have less than a 3% acceptance rate--the most competitive among them less than 1% (yes, they received over 1000 applicants and accepted less than 10).

Dec 4, 2023 · I'm nearly 27, five years out of undergrad where I completed my B.A. in English with a Creative Writing Emphasis, and a first-time applicant. I'm applying to what may be an excessive number of 16 programs LOL. I was torn between pragmatically wanting full funding and the fantasy of pursuing my writing dreams in New York.
There doesn't seem to be too much info about Creative Writing MFA programs on Reddit, so hopefully this can serve as an additional resource for future applicants. Stats: 3.83 undergraduate GPA, BS in biology, minor in English/writing, one fiction publication, first-generation student, one year out of undergrad.

The most renowned and competitive creative writing degrees offer every student a full tuition waiver and monthly stipends.
The things I learned from my failed attempts to get into MA programs two years before applying for my MFA were: Don't write a stiff, formal personal statement. You're a creative writer, so let your voice and personality shine. Make sure you don't put off submitting your applications until the last day, and follow every single guideline to a T.
