May 2, 2024 · Walker and Grabe fired the two OMS engines to move Atlantis a safe distance away from the IUS burn that took place one hour after deployment, sending Magellan on its way to Venus. The primary task of the mission accomplished, the astronauts prepared for their first night’s sleep in space.
During the mission, Atlantis deployed the Venus-bound Magellan probe into orbit. The mission was officially designated STS-30R as the original STS-30 designator belonged to STS-61-A, the 22nd Space Shuttle mission. Official documentation for that mission contained the designator STS-30 throughout.
May 11, 2021 · Magellan was bound for Venus, the first NASA mission to Earth’s “sister planet” since The Pioneer Venus Orbiter and Multiprobe arrived there in 1978. Magellan was a resourceful project with an ambitious objective—orbit the planet, capturing radar images of the surface to develop a topographic map.
Feb 26, 2010 · On May 4, 1989, Magellan was carried aloft by the shuttle Atlantis from Kennedy Space Center, marking the first time that a planetary spacecraft was launched via the space shuttle. This Atlantis took Magellan into low Earth orbit and then released it from the shuttle’s cargo bay.
Magellan team members have been occupied with two primary tasks during the cruise to Venus. The first was to fly the spacecraft and evaluate the performance of its various subsystems and components in the actual space environment.
