The name Cupertino first became widely used when John T. Doyle, a San Francisco lawyer, and historian, named his winery on McClellan Road Cupertino. After the turn of the 20th century, Cupertino displaced the former name for the region, which was West Side.
Cupertino owes its earliest mention in recorded history to Spaniards with a pioneering spirit. In 1776, Captain Juan Bautista de Anza led an expedition from Sonora, Mexico, up the coast of California, aiming to establish a presidio (fort) on San Francisco Bay.

- Alameda. It is Spanish for "grove of poplar (or cottonwood) trees" or "tree-lined avenue." By 1795, the southern part of the region was already referred to as la Alameda.
