Apr 1, 2021 · A complete history of the Hallicrafters Company; part of our growing research archive of notable Chicago manufacturers and their products.
A first professional taste of radio came in 1923, when Halligan became a sales manager for the Tobe Deutschmann Corporation, then a major manufacturer of radio parts. Deutschmann wanted a store in downtown Boston, so to accommodate him, Halligan opened a small outlet near Boston's City Hall.
In 1924 he became sales manager for his old friend Toby Deutschmann, who was distributing imported radio parts to American radio manufacturers. By 1928, Toby's business was booming. Bill decided to strike out on his own as a manufactures' representative, selling parts directly to the radio makers.
Under the new ownership following the 1966 exit of Halligan, radio manufacturing ceased and the Hallicrafters name became just another piece of communications history. (Note that by clicking the photo above, you can see the original manual and kit assembly instructions for this radio.)
The Hallicrafters Company manufactured, marketed, and sold radio equipment, and to a lesser extent televisions and phonographs, beginning in 1932. The company was founded by William J. Halligan and based in Chicago, Illinois , United States.
The first Hallicrafters short-wave model, the S-1, appears in Radio News in April 1934. Radio News appeared about a month before its cover date, and ads had to be submitted two months before.
