Jul 21, 2024 · 1855- Columbus schools grow in number to 28, though there are only 5 actual independent school buildings. 1855- Columbus schools enrollment reaches 1,105 students. 1857- Annual student final exams are implemented for the first time. 1858- One of the first US kindergartens is opened for German students at the intersection of Rich and Pearl streets.
In Columbus (and Springfield), the school board opened schools to admit African Americans students for two reasons: separate schools would have been more costly and, unlike most places in Ohio, Columbus’s African American population was scattered and settled throughout the city, resulting in fewer African American students in each school.

Aug 12, 2021 · Graduation on June 5, 1919, saw 42 girls and 5 boys receive a diploma at the Springer Opera House. African Americans did not have high school level education yet. Next Week: We will continue to explore the growth of schools in Columbus with the construction of the St. Elmo School, Jordan High School, Baker High School, and Spencer High School.
Aug 19, 2021 · New agenda items facing the school board in 1924 included a $150,000 bond issue of the building of a stadium for high school games and the selection of Wildwood Park as the new site for the high school. Wynnton and City View (close to Rose Hill) schools were also added to the city schools as the city limits of Columbus were increased.
