Sep 1, 2006 · Let us first consider the idea of physical death. Jesus died on a cross outside Jerusalem at the hand of the Romans (Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23; John 19). None of us faced that death. He did not take our place on a cross. If the particular physical death He endured was a substitute for anyone, it would be Barabbas (Matthew 27:16-26), not us.
