Lake Jackson, covering 3,212 acres (12.95 km 2), is located within the city of Sebring, Florida. Sebring is the county seat of Highlands County. Lake Jackson, a freshwater lake, is approximately 25 feet (8 m) at its deepest. Most of the area is fairly shallow.
The Hare family lived on the lake, hence the name. But on the first maps of Sebring (1912), Lake Hare had been changed to Lake Jackson. No one knows for sure why the name Lake Jackson was chosen, but it is widely believed that it was intended to honor the man who surveyed the area in the 1850s.
Lake Jackson in Florida has a rich and complex history, dating back thousands of years. The lake, located in Leon County, near the city of Tallahassee, has played a significant role in the lives of Native American tribes, European settlers, and modern-day residents.
- Alachua. a Timucuan word meaning “sink” or “big jug” (sources differ). It was used to describe the many sinkholes in the area, many of which have become bowl-shaped lakes.
- Baker. Named for James McNair Baker, a confederate Florida senator and judge during the Civil War. The county was named for him while he was serving as a judge.
- Bay. Named after St. Andrews Bay, which is a defining characteristic of the county.
- Bradford. Named in honor of Richard Bradford, who was apparently the first Floridian officer to die in the Civil War during the Battle of Santa Rosa Island.
Early scientists in the region, like Sellard, were completely unaware of the Florida Aquifer's influence on Lake Jackson. It wasn't until 1936 when Victor Timothy first provided a description of the "carbonate units" making up the hydrologic system that a more complete understanding was possible.
The state received its name from that conquistador, who called the peninsula La Pascua Florida in recognition of the verdant landscape and because it was the Easter season, which the Spaniards called Pascua Florida (Festival of Flowers).
