In 1942 a portion of Lake Jackson was first developed as a company town for workers of the Dow Chemical Company; it developed 5,000 acres on the former Abner Jackson Plantation. An oxbow lake was also named after the planter, whose house was located at the lake.

Built by Abner Jackson and his wife, Margaret, in 1844, the Lake Jackson Plantation became one of the most profitable sugar refineries in the state. Over time, Jackson expanded his namesake property to almost 3750 acres and acquired two additional plantations, Darrington and Retrieve.
First called the Lake Place, it later came to be known as the Lake Jackson Plantation. By all accounts, the Lake Jackson Plantation was an elegant complex with a columned, colonial style main house, brick outbuildings, ornamental gardens, and a state-of-the-art sugar mill.
The Hare family lived on the lake, hence the name. But on the first maps of Sebring (1912), Lake Hare had been changed to Lake Jackson. No one knows for sure why the name Lake Jackson was chosen, but it is widely believed that it was intended to honor the man who surveyed the area in the 1850s.
