The prefix "Little" wasn't always part of the name of our lake. Indeed, it's something of a mystery as to precisely when the name was changed. When Sebring was first founded, the southern cove of the lake was simply considered part of Lake Jackson.
History. In 1928 Harder Hall, a classic Spanish Style hotel and golf resort, was built on the shore of Little Lake Jackson. It was built in Sebring because the city was a stop on the railroad. In 1953 it was bought by Victor and David Jacobson and partners Larry Tennenbaum and Sam Levy.
The Hare family lived on the lake, hence the name. But on the first maps of Sebring (1912), Lake Hare had been changed to Lake Jackson. No one knows for sure why the name Lake Jackson was chosen, but it is widely believed that it was intended to honor the man who surveyed the area in the 1850s.

In 1942 a portion of Lake Jackson was first developed as a company town for workers of the Dow Chemical Company; it developed 5,000 acres on the former Abner Jackson Plantation. An oxbow lake was also named after the planter, whose house was located at the lake.
