For forty years they maintained their doctrinal purity and had served Christ, but that service had become mechanical.

  6. We love because He loved us first and as we know this love in our innermost being, we abide in Him and our love for Him grows. But for the church of Ephesus, 36 years had now passed from when Paul wrote this prayer to when Jesus gives His report card and calls them back to their first love.
