March 4, 1791 - Vermont is added as the 14th State. Carved from portions of New York and New Hampshire, and first known as New Connecticut, Vermont spent fourteen years as an independent republic before joining the Union.
The settlers of the New Hampshire Grants saw themselves first as Americans, treated Vermont as a state or vital part of the United States, and gave no clear evidence of ever wanting to create a separate republic. On the other hand, Vermonters did see themselves as distinct from Canadians, both French and English.
