Through a magical diary, Harry sees a younger Dumbledore in a series of flashbacks. The diary once belonged to Tom Riddle, who eventually became Voldemort. In one flashback, Harry sees Dumbledore questioning Riddle about a series of attacks on Muggle-born students.

Since he had his reasons the 5th book, he tried to be in Harry’s life the 6th book. Although they were very sporadic interactions, dumbledore was always gone from the school and Harry was busy in his 6th year. Yes the bond isn’t a strong one and Harry barely knows dumbledore but it was necessary.
