  4. Soils in Canada are classified according to the Canadian System of Soil Classification (CSSC), a formal taxonomic system with a hierarchy of six levels. The highest level in the CSSC, the order, is based on diagnostic horizons that reflect the effects of the dominant soil-forming process. There are 10 soil orders.
