No-foundation Makeup Step #1: Prep your Skin. The skin is the protagonist for this makeup, and we want to make our skin look as even, flawless, and fresh as possible and we want to do this without foundation. So prepping the skin is MUST-DO. And the way I do it is with my favorite skin-prep routine to do before makeup.
- Skin Prep. Makeup can only do so much; proper skin prep is key to getting the most out of your makeup. And, like most things in beauty, proper skin prep depends on a handful of factors—your skin type, how much makeup you're wearing, how long you need your look to last, your goals, and so on.
- Primer. Think of primer as a long-wearing booster to your makeup routine. It's an opportunity to target your main complexion concerns before applying any makeup to your face.
- Foundation and Concealer. As we've said, makeup application order is subjective—and that's especially true when it comes to complexion products. Many of our experts mention the great concealer-foundation debate (which comes first?)
- Contour and/or Bronzer. While all of our makeup artists tend to apply blush later on, Shakeshaft makes a point to apply bronzer and/or contour at this point, following foundation and concealer.
- Establish a healthy skincare routine. Healthy, glowing skin is at the core of every good no-makeup makeup look, so it's important to establish a good skincare routine if you want to rock this look.
- Use a light base. A no-makeup makeup look is all about looking as close to your natural face as possible, and it starts with your base. You want something light with a natural finish, and luckily there are tons of options.
- Skip the contour. We love a sculpted face as much as the next gal, but a flawless contour doesn't really jive with the no-makeup makeup look. It's tough to do without loading on the product, and the more product that's on your face, the less of your actual face is shown.
- Give yourself a bronzy glow. No-makeup makeup looks change with the seasons. You may want to use bronzer sparingly in the fall and winter, but in the warmer months, you have full license to give yourself a bronzy, sunkissed look.

Every morning and every night, wash your face with a gentle facial cleanser. Then, apply a lightweight face moisturizer that’s made for your skin type, such as oily, dry, or combination. [1]

Apr 15, 2022 · This pigment-free highlight gives skin a hydrating dewiness that won’t give your no-makeup makeup game away. 7. Swap Lipsticks for Balms. "Mixing lip liners with balms allows you to even out the shape of your lip and add a little bit of colour without looking too ‘done.’. It’s sort of a cheat.
